ZRP’s long distance runner, Elijah Mabhunu overcame his 2015 malaise to claim this year’s Coca Cola four minute mile challenge held at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair grounds recently.

The race was held as part of the closing day’s entertainment at the popular fair. And this year, the police athletes controlled the proceedings, with Mabhunu emerging as the overall winner to pocket $800-00. Last year, he finished the race on fifth position.

In winning the grand prize, Mabhunu pipped a host of other professional athletes from around Zimbabwe’s best, including his ZRP teammates.

Among these was last year’s winner, Trust Chidomaya, who found the going a bit tough as he finished the race in fourth position. That Chidomaya was even at the starting line this year was almost miraculous, given that he almost fell outside the qualifying times during the heats.

The 2015 Commissioner’s General Sports Gala reigning champion Isaac Mpofu came two places behind Chidomaya in sixth position as he formed part of an impressive cast of ZRP athletes. Another cop, Blessed Chidziva completed the top ten. However seasoned campaigner Cephas Pasipamire fell outside the top group, as he finished thirteenth.

The Support Unit Provincial Angling team ‘Mabhinya’ as they are affectionately known were recently crowned Commissioner General of Police 2016 angling Champions after beating fifteen other ZRP Provinces, at a colourful ceremony held at Boulder Creek Lounge in Drummond Range in Gwanda, Matebelend South Province.

Support Unit beat the ZRP 2015 Champions, Police Protection Unit (PPU) with a huge margin of 68,890 kgs after harvesting121kgs of fish. They walked away with a Flouting trophy, 12 Gold Medals, $480-00 prize money courtesy of the Commissioner General of Police.

It appeared that PPU, Harare and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) who secured first, second and fourth positions respectively in the last years’ Angling Tournament, approached this year’s tournament with a lot of complacency which saw them settling for position six (PPU), position nine (CID) and position twelve (Harare).

It is very difficult to predict correctly in a game of angling, even past performance cannot be an indicator of who will make it into the top three.

Midlands Province, which was dominated by members of the Women Network, moved up one step from their last years’ position three(3) to position two(2) and were crowned the Commissioner General of Police 2016 Angling first runners up. They walked away with $360-00 prize money, 12 Silver Medals and five packs of fishing hooks.

From the City of Kings, also emerged a hard fighting angling team who fought all the way from their 2015 position five(05) to be crowned the second(02) runners up. They walked away with twelve(12) Bronze Medals, $240-00 and 05 packs of fishing hooks.
